There have been many pioneering marketing campaigns utilising virtual reality. One example being HBO’s ‘Ascend the Wall’ experience which showed viewers entering a lift kitted-out in the virtual reality gear where they were then pelted with cold air and exposed to swift movements. United with the visuals from the virtual reality headset, this provided an extraordinarily realistic experience of being raised up the buildings wall. Often these experiences can be so realistic that people will share the news with their family and friend network and before you know it, they qualify as viral.

VR on the web and beyond – how could it look?

Logically, the internet appears a place that would benefit greatly from virtual reality. A platform now connecting countless people and dispersing out into all areas of commerce. In reality how would the Internet look with virtual reality integrated into it, and who would be bold enough to make it a reality?

Currently a web page may simply list their products in 2D, however a 3D virtual reality led web design would allow you to try on garments, browse stores and perhaps enable you to communicate with staff, all from the comfort of your home.

VR and gamers

Many people will automatically think virtual reality is just for gamers and based upon the price tag, you would not be wrong in thinking so. Based upon this, understandably virtual reality is being targeting towards true gamers, as the likelihood is that they already have the core equipment required and naturally they will be the first to adopt this new technology.

For the consumers not ready to take the plunge and invest into this technology, there are entry-level devices available, such as Google Cardboard. Google Cardboard allows operators to use their mobile devise for virtual reality at the mere cost of just a few pounds. Inevitably with the price tag comes a much lesser quality of hardware, but for the price it’s certainly a viable alternative. It will attract more mainstream consumers to virtual reality, those who otherwise may be doubtful to make full use of the available hardware.

VR on the web – who will create it?

So in reality, which company would be developing these virtual websites? The answer: a new species of web developer. Web developers recognise the variances between style, content and functionality, they certainly understand how they work individually to adjoin to create something superb, but how would these notions transfer over to virtual reality is a yet-unexplored realm.

A conventional web developer will have vast experience and understanding in 2D design, but will more often not have explored into 3D forming. The stream of knowledge between a 2D and a 3D space is not comparable, and instead may be more alike to gaming development than web development.

VR on the web – the alternatives

Despite the lack of current 3D web developments, certain associations are making steps in the right direction. Initiating this movement are Mozilla who are developing WebVR: javascript that transforms HTML and CSS into a 3D environment.

This development from Mozilla demonstrates the potential of 3D technology, which rather unexpectedly creates little additional overhead to a website. 

Web VR could be the gateway into browsing stores online and at your fingertips it transforms into a virtual store for you to browse in virtual reality.

Nevertheless, Web VR still has a way to go, as none of the large establishments are implementing it – yet. Sure, there are websites that do, but they’re more alike to tech examples and as of now there’s no virtual reality web, intertwined together and undeniably interconnecting.

We are certain virtual reality has an exciting, evolving future ahead of itself, with many projections outside of the realms of gaming, but what guise this evolution will appear or how it will be applied is currently undecided. Nonetheless, it is certainly sure to be worth the high anticipation.
